"In France," said James, "the life of the mind is taken for granted. In England, people walk around like they're bits of meat."

"Like a chop followed by a sausage followed by some ribs," I suggested.

"Yes," he replied, pressing on regardless, "in France intellectual life is more important."

Poor James. How he suffers.

This made me laugh twice. First when I read it. Then telling about it to Christophe after seeing Revolutionary Road in the cinema. You should go and see it if you fancy seeing your James on the screen, looking just like him and speaking just like him.
